Without impurities, sapphire can be a superior optical window material because it is clear and transparent throughout the visible light range, even as far away as ultraviolet and infrared light. With such characteristics, it's no wonder sapphire has ever been a precious gem. These same properties also make sapphire attractive for non-precious applications, and today's state-of-the-art synthetic crystal growth and processing technologies are driving the increasing demand for this material.
The sapphire window is a flat polished product based on single crystal sapphire processing. The sapphire protective window is a special window that uses the pressure, abrasion, and high temperature characteristics of sapphire to protect the observer, the inside of the instrument and the inside of the container.
Single crystal sapphire windows are very suitable for demanding applications (such as laser systems) because of their extremely high surface hardness, high thermal conductivity, high dielectric constant, and resistance to chemical acids and alkalis. Since the hardness of sapphire is second only to diamond, and its structural strength is very high, the thickness of the sapphire window made by enhanced light transmittance is thinner than that of the general high-dielectric window. In terms of chemistry, sapphire is a single crystal of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), which is very suitable for transmission between 0.2 and 5.5 μm. In general optical applications, the basic needs of customers can be met without coating.
